Books Cleanup

Books Cleanup for Small BusinessThe owner on a separate line

Household money in an expense, or a contribution booked as a sale, both make the business number lie.

Separate the owner.

Two directions of the same mistake.

Personal spending that landed in an expense makes the company look poorer than it is, and it makes the household look like a vendor. The other direction is quieter. Money the owner put in, booked as sales, makes a gift look like revenue. A lender, and later a return, will believe the label you gave it.

The line exists so those two can be seen without a speech. Lessons about which card you swiped, and tours of a company file, live on other addresses. Here the question is simply whether personal money touched the business account.

A mark you can pick out from far away.

A charge you can picture from across the room can still be sitting on the wrong account. The grocery run, the birthday dinner, the tank of gas on the way home. Those are easy to remember and easy to leave inside an expense, which is what owner spending does when it hides there.

Unidentified deposits get the same patience. A deposit in the owner's own name stays off the sales total until a paper calls the deposit a sale. While that paper is missing, the amount can sit where it stays visible instead of being swallowed by the sales total.

Direction matters more than the net.

A draw and a contribution move opposite ways on the same line. Folding them into one net number hides which way the money went. A lender reading the year, and the return that follows, will believe the direction you left on the page.

One example is enough to start. A personal bill that hit the business account, or money you put in that got labeled as a sale. Cover the amount if you want. The label is the part we need to see.

Say what was personal

One example is enough. Amounts can stay covered.
