Books Cleanup

Books Cleanup for Small BusinessThe election before any move

A move that is right for one election can be wrong for another. The question comes first.

Ask the election.
A Brunsviga calculator, the carriage of digits above the keys

Name the company before you move a number.

The entity and the election sit above any reclass list. A disregarded company, a partnership, and a corporation do not share a home for the same dollar. Moving a deposit because it feels like income can be the wrong move once the election is known.

Choosing S status is a federal filing, Form 2553, and it attaches to the company you already have. It does not mint a second company. The window the instructions describe runs two months and fifteen days. Nothing on this page treats that filing as a promised saving. Pay the owner who works in the company a reasonable wage before any distribution, because the order is the rule and the result is not guaranteed.

If the company exists and the return in front of you has no trace of it, the first job is to locate the entity, not to reclass a month in the dark.

The street was named before the rooms.

The company had a name on the federal file before any room in the books was filled in. An election has to be named before any reclass starts. A deposit moved because it feels like income can be the wrong move once that name is known, and the later papers can wait.

Federal dates that sit beside this cleanup are the quarterly estimates, generally the 15th of April, June, September, and January. Those dates are about the tax you expect to owe, not about renaming a deposit. The January information returns are a separate list, and they do not choose the election. Read the current IRS instructions for the dollar lines. If those instructions change, they win, and this page will not freeze an old figure in their place.

Disregarded, partnership, S, or C. If you are unsure, say unsure.
